Jerome (Trey) Sims BIO
I’ve always had an extremely strong self-will to want and work hard to be successful. Whether it’s school work, sports or community service activities, I work tirelessly to do the best job that I can do. I have been a dedicated athlete throughout my high school experience. Despite starting high school as a 14-year-old freshman at 5 foot & 3 inches tall and 105 pounds and being cut from the freshman basketball team; I have been dedicated to becoming a better basketball player by continued to work on my basketball skills and overall athletic strength. Now as a 6’1” & 160 pound 17-year-old rising senior, my athletic commitment has allowed me to play at a high level on my AAU basketball club team and a national high school prep team.
I’ve listed video highlight links to this email as well as my first SAT (1400) & ACT (31) test. I plan to take both the SAT/ACT test again in the Fall with the goal of scoring at/over a 1500 on the SAT and at/over a 34 on the ACT.
As a basketball player, I would describe myself as a: Late bloomer. Combo guard. Very good shooter. Extremely competitive. I make key plays at the right time. I’m a very good defensive player. My friends tell me my style of play is similar like Patty Mills.
Academically, I have always demonstrated tenacity by taking the hardest classes that I could take in high school with the aim of being the best prepared for college. I would like to earn a degree in Biomedical Engineering from a top university with the goal to attend medical school.
My favorite classes have always been math and science. I’ve take many Honors classes such as Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors Environment Science as well as AP Biology, AP English, AP Economics, AP Government, & AP US History.
Outside of the classroom, I’ve participated in several STEM enrichment programs over the past 5 years that have also reinforced my desire to become an engineer/physician.
The STEM programs that I’ve completed include:
- Cornell University Catalyst Summer Engineering Program (2017)
- Georgia Tech University Summer Engineering Institute (2016) where my team won first place in the 3-week competition of 12 teams of 5 juniors and seniors
- Arizona State University Summer Research Engineering Program (2015) where I worked side by side with graduate and undergraduate students to use stem cells to develop a functional heart substitute
- Arizona County Fair Honorable Mention (2015)
- Barrett’s Neurological Hospital Summer Program (2014) where I learned about cell development, growth and synthesis which solidified his desire to be a physician
- Phoenix Science Center Summer Program (2013)
- Math Counts Competition (2010-2012) throughout middle school
