Benson & Crawford Are Clarendon's Senior Leaders

I had the opportunity to check up with Clarendon Girls Basketball Coach Korey Conkin today. It's the beginning of a new season.  Last year was highly successful but they have lost key scoring and rebounding as well as ball handling depth.  It's Coach Conkin's 5th year at the helm of the Lady Broncos.

Starting the season 1-2 Coach Conkin was candid about the early season to this point. "Without a true post presence we are going to struggle against teams with height. We've played some big, physical girls to this point. If we don't do a better job of blocking out hitting more outside shots, then we'll continue to have a hard time against these bigger opponents. Our theme this year is RISE."

Perryton 51  Clarendon 41

The Lady Broncos were led by Senior Jade Benson. Senior Ashlyn Crawford chipped in with 7.

Clarendon 42  White Deer 32

Benson again led the way with 14 points and Crawford had 10. Newcomer/Sophomore Finley Cunningham had her first double digit game for the Lady Broncos with 3 three pointers.  She will be the most consistent deep threat for Clarendon this season.

Childress  61  Clarendon  37

Kaylin Hicks had 9 points as no Lady Bronco reached double figures. Benson had 8 points, all from the free throw line and Newcomer MaKenna Shadle added 7 points.

In both losses to this point, Senior Jade Benson was in foul trouble.  Quite simply, she has to mentally adjust her game.  Sje plays hard but this team will depend on her to be the primary scorer.  She can't be sitting on the bench for extended periods of time.  She'll have to pick her spots and not be OVERLY aggressive and pick up any cheap fouls.  This is tough when a player is aggressive by nature, but she can't challenge every shot, ball handler or rebound because the whistles will add up.  As Benson goes, so goes this season for the Lady Broncos, in this man's opinion. A third reliable scorer needs to emerge and perhaps by committee the entire roster needs to do a little more of the "dirty work".  The Lady Broncos take on McLean on Tuesday, November 17th.
