Goddard Rockets, A Storied Baseball Program In New Mexico

03/01/2020, 1:15pm CST
By Keith Balderaz

The D1 Nation would like to welcome The Goddard (NM) Rockets to our prep coverage network. The Rockets have become one of the premiere high school baseball programs in the Southwestern USA, winning 7 consecutive District titles, along with the 2017 Class 5A New Mexico Championship. From 2014-2018 the Rockets made 5 consecutive appearances in the State Title Game, amassing a staggering 174 wins against only 37 losses in that span.

I had an opportunity to chop it up with Head Baseball Coach Gilbert Alvaredo who's been the skipper since 2017. I asked him what is the key to the program's success.  His reply was firm but concise. "It all starts with discipline.  I treat my best player the same as one of the non starters. There's no start treatment.  And as far as our consistency on the field I've got guys who are 100% committed to chasing perfection when we teach the fundamentals.  We drill our players over and over with the fundamentals and the little things.  That's the foundation of our success."

The Rockets, in collaboration with D1nation, recently hosted a player development camp to kick off the season.   Coach Gil Alvarado looks to get back to the state tournament and highlighted a few players that will surely aid in this journey.   Good luck to the Rockets and thank you to the Goddard Rocket Booster Club! - Coach Balderaz & Coach Ivany

A couple of weeks ago, the D1 Nation's Keith Balderaz (who happens to be an old college team mate of Coach Alvaredo at Eastern New Mexico State University) headed up to Goddard and assisted with a preseason camp for the Goddard players.  It was a great success and several players caught our early attention.

With this talent in the fold there's no reason not to believe that Goddard will be in the thick of things in 2020 in their chase for the hardware. The present fuses with the past to form Goddard's legacy.  Over the last few years they've had a number of players move on to the next level.
