As the D1 Nation Heads towards the latter part of 2016 and beyond, I'd like to welcome Derrick Stevens as our Vice President of Global Sports Marketing. As the Founder of D1 Nation I envisioned a bold new strategy for the future of youth sports. After 25 years and countless relationships I targeted Stevens as the man I wanted to help me develop and implement that strategy. Like myself, first and foremost he has a burning desire to help others.
Stevens' role, alongside the Founder will be the development and implementation of our multiple sports platform. Identifying quality affiliate owners and State Directors with a passion to help others, people who have integrity as well as knowledge will be a priority. Continuing to expand our D1 Ambassadors club program and putting together camps and events world wide are also high on the list. However, the unveiling of our Online Resume' and Recruiting Profiles is going to become our signature product here at the D1 Nation. We feel we are going to revolutionize recruiting and recognition for the youth sports market.
Derrick is the classic overachiever, a man that showed unrelenting grit during his playing and coaching career. The energy and expertise that he brings to the D1 Nation is boundless.
At the start of his athletic career, playing high school basketball in Houston, Texas, Derrick wouldn’t have dreamed of the places that basketball would take him. After playing one season in Arizona at Northland Pioneer College, Derrick received an athletic scholarship to play NCAA Division I basketball at Colorado State University. This educational opportunity, made possible through the game of basketball, resulted in him earning a BA in Sociology and an increased passion for the game.
His college nickname that's stuck with him through his adult life is "Scraps". As an understudy PG at Colorado State under former NBA player Milt Palacios, Stevens was constantly battling in practice, thus earning the moniker. This summer I had the opportunity to work alongside Milt at the Native American Top 50 Camp and Milt just shook his head, laughed and said, "Max, that dude wouldn't quit. He was undersized and I was headed for the NBA but he gave me all I could handle every single practice. We almost came to blows several times."
After a successful career at Colorado State, Derrick went on to have an extensive career (10+ years) playing professional and semi-professional basketball. He was able to play abroad in Mexico, Iceland, Puerto Rico, Spain, China, Sweden, and most recently, Luxembourg and Germany. Derrick has also played in several American leagues, including: NBDL – NBA Development League; ABA – American Basketball Association; WBA – World Basketball Association; IBL – International Basketball League; CBA – Continental Basketball Association; PBL – Premier Basketball League; and USBL – United States Basketball League.
After life as a basketball player Derrick then started a training company ( Global Elite) and a year later became a coach at the professional level in China in the CBA first as an assistant and then as head coach of the farm team in Fujain, China. The same year he also signed on with Unlimited Sports Agency which is an agency based in Beijing, China.
Stevens was an international scout and consultant for the company which he still works with today. Derrick's goal is to use his life's testimonies and story of growing up in the inner city ghetto (his words) of Houston's 3rd ward and subsequently "making it out." He's used basketball as a way to connect and give back to the youth in efforts to touch and save as many lives as possible. He uses his testimony as a way of helping them learn from his life's hard ships and the mistakes he has made.
"WE ALL HAVE A STORY BUT THE KEY IS HOW A MAN USES IT FOR THE GREATER GOOD THAT COUNTS!"- Derrick Stevens
